Smash closes part of A339

A SECTION of the A339 has been closed after a two-car smash this afternoon.

At about 1pm, a Nissan Micra and a Ford Focus were involved in a collision on the Basingstoke to Newbury road, at the junction with Crabs Hill, in Wolverton.

Police, firefighters from Basingstoke fire station, an ambulance and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance are all currently at the scene.

The 44-year-old driver of the Focus was released from his vehicles by firefighters, and the 72-year-old female driver of the Micra was having to be cut out of her car, police said.

Both drivers are thought to have serious injuries and were taken to Basingstoke hospital. The female driver's injuries are considered life threatening.

The A339 has been closed from the roundabout at Rooksdown Lane, in Basingstoke, and from the Newtown Roundabout, on the county border. It is expected to remain closed for some time.

Police are advising drivers, particularly of heavy goods vehicles, to avoid the area.
