Elderly woman critical after crash

AN ELDERLY woman is critically ill in hospital following a crash on the A34 near Whitchurch.

At about 9.35am today, a blue Ford Fiesta car travelling northbound on the busy commuter route near Whitchurch was in collision with a blue Ford Fiesta van, also travelling north.

The incident happened near to the Firgo crossroads between Bullington and Whitchurch.

The driver of the car, an 82-year-old woman from Bishops Waltham, sustained serious head and pelvic injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital.

The driver of the van was uninjured.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance was dispatched to the scene along with an ambulance crew, an ambulance officer and two BASICS doctors.

A section of the A34 had to be closed for more than four hours to allow for a full investigation of the scene.
